Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum points score to receive an invitation?+
The minimum score required to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect is 65 points. However, reaching 65 does not guarantee an invitation — it simply makes you eligible to enter the pool. Actual invitation scores (the "cut-off") are determined by each invitation round and vary by occupation and visa subclass. Popular occupations often require 80–90+ points to receive an invitation in a reasonable timeframe.
How often are invitations issued through SkillSelect?+
The Department of Home Affairs issues invitation rounds roughly every month, though the timing and number of invitations can vary. Each round is specific to visa subclasses (189, 190, 491) and occupations. Candidates with the highest points scores are invited first within each occupation group. You can check recent invitation rounds on the official SkillSelect statistics page on the DoHA website.
Can I claim both Australian and overseas skilled employment points?+
Yes. Australian skilled employment and overseas skilled employment are separate categories, and you can earn points in both. For example, if you have worked 3 years overseas in your nominated occupation (+5 pts) and 2 years in Australia (+5 pts), you would receive 10 points total across the two employment categories. However, only work in your nominated occupation (or a closely related occupation as assessed by your skills assessing authority) will count.
What is the Australian Study Requirement?+
The Australian Study Requirement (ASR) means completing at least two academic years (equivalent to 92 weeks) of full-time study in Australia, leading to a qualification of at least diploma level. The study must have been completed at an Australian institution on a student visa (or another eligible visa). Meeting the ASR awards 5 additional points and is also a mandatory requirement for the Subclass 485 Graduate visa post-study work stream.
