About Condition 8558

Everything you need to know to stay compliant and avoid visa cancellation.

Visaify is your personal compliance assistant for Australian long-term visitor visas.

Condition 8558: You cannot stay more than 12 months in any 18-month period in Australia.
What is Condition 8558?

This is a mandatory condition on most multiple-entry Tourist Stream Visitor Visas (Subclass 600) with validity of 1 year or more.

"The holder must not stay in Australia for more than 12 months in any period of 18 months."

It applies even if you leave and re-enter — every day counts toward the rolling 18-month total.

How is the 18-Month Period Calculated?

It's a rolling window — not fixed. Every time you enter Australia, Immigration checks the previous 18 months.

You enter on 15 May 2025 → They check: 15 Nov 2023 to 15 May 2025.
If you already spent 360 days in Australia → You can only stay 5 more days.

Pro Tip: Always plan your last exit date first.

What Happens if You Breach 8558?
  • Immediate visa cancellation at the border
  • Future visa refusals (even years later)
  • 3-year re-entry ban possible
  • Loss of trust with Immigration
